Looking for the best things to do when you only have a day or two in Amsterdam? Look no further, here’s your top 5 list of must-dos when you don’t have much time.
Being on short trip means there is no time to wait in lines, and not much time for museum visits or other things that can take up most of your day. Unless you love museums, then go for it – it’s all about your priorities! When I’m only in a place for a couple of days, particularly for my first time in that city, I try to do things that let me see as many of the main sights as possible, while being aware that I probably don’t have time to go in any of them. This is my top 5 list for Amsterdam, that can be done in a two day visit.
1. Visit the “I amsterdam” sign
An icon of Amsterdam, the sign makes for a great photo op.
NOTE: After I wrote this, the “I amsterdam” sign was taken down as some thought it promoted over-tourism, which has been a problem in Amsterdam. There is a smaller version at the Schiphol Airport.
2. Visit Dam Square
Located in the historical center of Amsterdam, Dam Square is home to the Royal Palace and the National Monument, honoring WWII victims. It is one of the main sites in Amsterdam, and a great place for people watching.
3. Stroll through Vondelpark
The Vondelpark is a beautiful oasis in the city. A popular park to bike, stroll, and people watch. Take a relaxing stroll under the trees!
4. Ride a Bike
There are more bikes than cars in Amsterdam, and it seems that everyone is riding one. Get in on the fun by going on a guided bike tour. It’s a great way to try out a bike in this biking friendly city, and get a guided look around at the same time.
5. Take a Cruise
Sure Amsterdam is famous for bikes, but it’s also famous for the canals. A canal cruise is a great way to see the city. Go at dusk and watch everything light up as the sun goes down.
