I’m a new motorcycle rider and my thumb goes numb. I get shooting nerve pain for DAYS after riding. Will a Crampbuster Cruise Assist fix my numb thumb?
Thumb pain or numb thumb on a motorcycle
I think a big part of the reason that my thumb is going numb is that I’m a new motorcycle rider. I grip the throttle more tightly than is necessary, plus I’m just not used to riding yet. My thumb isn’t a problem only while I’m riding – the pain in my thumb lasts for days afterward. It is numb, sometimes tingling, and I get shooting nerve pain.
Cruise Assist or Throttle Assist
I was looking at devices that can help with using the throttle. They are called either Cruise Assist or Throttle Assist. This is not actual cruise control, and it’s not a throttle lock. It’s a piece of plastic that fits onto the throttle allowing you to operate the throttle with the palm of your hand. This means your thumb does not have to be on the throttle – you can relax it and save it from vibrations. It is supposed to help with motorcycle numb thumb or sore wrist from twisting the throttle.

Motorcycle Crampbuster Cruise Assist – what size?
I looked at the Crampbuster Cruise Assist – which only cost around $10-$15 depending on the size. I chose the wider one because it looked more comfortable. There were some downsides for me to the wider one, which I’ll address down below.

Installing the Crampbuster Cruise Assist
To install the Crampbuster Throttle Assist, you gently pull it apart (only very slightly – it doesn’t take much) and slide it over the end of the grip on the throttle side. It may take a little more bending or effort depending on your grips. Adjust the position so it’s comfortable for your hand to press down on it while riding. If you need to adjust it, stop, take it off, and reposition.
Using the Crampbuster
The Crampbuster throttle assist is easy to use – just press down with the palm of your hand to accelerate. Roll off of it to slow down. This is where I discovered my issue with the wide version of the Crampbuster: I couldn’t use the throttle on its own without the Crampbuster. My hand wouldn’t fit onto the throttle next to the Crampbuster. I preferred to have the choice of using it when I wanted.
I ended up ordering the more narrow Crampbuster (standard size) and found that I could fit my hand along side it. This may be different for you depending on your motorcycle grips, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Did the Crampbuster Cruise Assist fix my numb thumb? Did it end the motorcycle thumb pain?
Yes! I’m happy to report I don’t have issues with a numb thumb from motorcycle riding any more. I used the Crampbuster throttle assist on a 3 hour ride, and had no nerve pain or other issues with my thumb. I ended up keeping both Crampbusters. The narrow one is on the throttle and I use the wider one on my clutch side as a wrist rest. It’s very comfortable for longer rides!
These worked great – even better than I expected. And they don’t cost much either. I definitely recommend them, both for comfort and for fixing a numb thumb when motorcycle riding.
Also – I was not paid for this and I did not get anything for free. I bought both Crampbusters from Amazon. I really do love them!
