About the underground kayak adventure

I visited the Red River Gorge for a backpacking trip, but I’m always on the lookout for extra adventures to round out my itinerary. When I discovered the chance to kayak inside an underground cave, I jumped at the chance to kayak. This cave isn’t a natural formation – it’s an abandoned limestone mine that flooded with water. While mining is long over, the cave has found a new life as a unique spot for kayaking.

Starting the kayak trip at The Gorge Underground

I booked my ticket online a few days before heading to the Red River Gorge. During the summer season, it’s best to reserve your spot well in advance as tours can sell out quickly. For those looking for an extra-special experience, there’s a deluxe clear kayak tour, but these slots fill up fast – I missed out!

After checking in, you’ll sign a waiver (of course), and attend a safety briefing. You’ll choose a helmet and a life jacket before the guides provide basic kayaking instructions – like avoiding the cave walls – and then head into the mine to reach the dock.

There are always two guides on the tour: one leading the group and another at the rear to make sure no one gets left behind.

Kayaking inside the mine: What to expect

Once you start paddling through the mine, the atmosphere is surreal. The guides share fascinating details about the history of the limestone mine as you glide through the calm wat4ers. Each kayker has a headlamp, though the mine also features some underwater lights that illuminate fish-filled waters. These fish are stocked and fed by the tour operators, and tend to gather near the lights (most likely where they are fed).

The atmosphere is quiet and serene, making it easy to focus on the unique adventure of kayaking underground.
