I recently visited the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, to see pieces of the Flying Dutchman—a WWII plane wreck in New Guinea connected to my next adventure. Why are we pushing boats up a river? Because there are a lot of things that can go wrong on a jungle expedition through one of the most remote and wild places on Earth!

In part three of my epic trek in Papua New Guinea, we head up the river to start our three week hike - and end up off schedule on day 1.

I'm following in the footsteps of a group of WWII soldiers - including my grandfather - known as the Ghost Mountain Boys. They were part of the U.S. 32nd Division known as the Red Arrows.

In part two of my epic trek in Papua New Guinea, we head for the village of Gagagaba where we spend the night. The trail I'm hiking - called the Kapa Kapa - is named after this village (kind of). It's my first look at the culture of Papua New Guinea, and the kindness and hospitality of the people.

During #WWII a group of American soldiers were sent on a grueling trek through the dense jungle and rugged terrain of #papuanewguinea to face the Japanese. My grandfather was one of them. In 2018, I set out to retrace that trek, following in the footsteps of the 32nd Infantry Division soldiers who became known as the Ghost Mountain Boys along the Kapa Kapa Trail.
