Sahara Camel Trek in Morocco: A Luxury Desert Camp Experience in Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi Dunes

Starting the Sahara Camel Trek from Fez
I booked a 3-day private tour with Sahara Camel Trips, traveling from Fez to Marrakesh with my two adult sons. No crowded tour buses—just the three of us in an SUV with our guide, Omar. Along the way we enjoyed breathtaking views, glimpses of desert wildlife, and plenty of delicious Moroccan food.
But the real magic began as the dunes rose on the horizon. Before long, we were on the golden sands of the Sahara, mounting camels for the ride into the desert.
Camel Trekking into the Erg Chebbi Dunes
We had the camel trek all to ourselves—just the three of us and our camel guide. The camels swayed across the soft sand as our shadows stretched across the dunes.
Halfway through, we stopped for some sandboarding. If you’re adventurous, you can stand up and carve down the dunes like a snowboarder. If you’re more cautious (or in the “I might break a hip” age range), you can sit down and still have a blast.
Back on the camels, we continued deeper into the desert as the sun began to set. The dunes glowed like fire as the last light dipped below the horizon. It was pure magic.
A Night in a Luxury Desert Camp in Merzouga
When we reached the camp, I was blown away. This was no roughing it—this was Sahara luxury. We were welcomed with Moroccan mint tea and snacks, then shown to our spacious private tent, complete with an ensuite bathroom.
Dinner was incredible, and since we were the only guests that night, it felt like a private experience. Afterward, we sat under a sky so clear it was bursting with stars, spotting countless shooting stars before calling it a night.
The sunrise the next morning was just as breathtaking, followed by a wonderful breakfast. To get back, we had the option of riding in a vehicle—but we all chose to return by camel. After all, cars are for everyday life. Camels are for the Sahara.

Quad Riding in the Sahara Desert
Our adventure didn’t stop there. We added on a quad biking excursion, which turned out to be one of the most exciting parts of the trip. Following our guide, we roared across the endless dunes, kicking up sand and laughing the whole way.
Again, it was just us and the guide—the Sahara felt like ours alone.
Beyond Merzouga: More Highlights of Morocco
From Merzouga, our tour continued toward Marrakesh with stops at Todra Gorge, Ouarzazate, and Aït Benhaddou. Every day brought something new and unforgettable.
But if I had to choose the single best moment of our two-week Morocco trip, it was without a doubt the Sahara camel trek and luxury desert camp in Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi dunes.
